The Ever-Changing and Always Cool Woods on Pender

The Ever-Changing and Always Cool Woods on Pender

Woods is the sort of luxe glamping escape you wish for, but rarely ever find outside of influencer Instagram feeds.

And yet here it is, on Pender, a medium-sized Gulf Island that’s about medium-busy—a mix of beautiful and stately summer vacation homes and more free-spirited hand-built cabins with boats retired on their front lawns.

You’ll find Woods right in the thick of spruce and fir trees on North Pender. It’s the ultimate glamping resort, with sparkling retro Airstream trailers, cool-again vintage 1970s campers, mini log cabins, a motel and on-site restaurant. It’s clear from the design (all the resort’s buildings are West Coast modern meets industrial Portland coffee shop), that this place is far from the Island standard family-run bed and breakfast.

The owner, chief visionary and on-site chef of Woods, Curtis Redel, left real estate to create this dream summer camp getaway back in 2014 and spared no expense. Each Airstream trailer (which, FYI, a new full-sized classic retails for about $200,000 CAD ), has its own wooden deck, complete with a propane fire bowl, colourful Acapulco chairs, a barbecue and a hot tub. Inside, a mod minimalist interior, red plaid blankets, camera-print pillows and luxe toiletries reinforce its reputation as the “Ace Hotel in the woods.”

But Redel gets that cool accommodations are just part of the equation. Coffee and Kitchen is where he serves up delicious farm-to-table eats—everything from vegan dahl to prosciutto and goat cheese pizza to chuck steak beef burgers—and hand-crafted cocktails, like lavender margaritas, spiked lemonade (with rosemary from their greenhouse) and caesars, while the camp-owned food truck is parked on the front lawn to offer even more dining options. Recently, Woods has even added a spa so you can get hot stone or full-body massage in the custom-designed Airstream trailer.

While Woods has been around for a while now, each year Redel seems to expand and make tweaks to improve his dream resort, and starting at $275, it can be your cool hipster reality for a night.
