What’s Happening: October 21-27

It’s your weekly list of things to do on Vancouver Island, and we’re not going to lie to you, Halloween might come up. For the costume-shy, we’ve surfaced a few events where you can escape the ghoulish festivities.

Oct. 22 | Tiki Tuesday at the Copper Owl If you’re looking to escape the recent bout of rain, transport yourself to the South Pacific at this Tiki pop-up happening at the Copper Owl on Oct. 22nd. Grass skirt and Hawaiian shirt attire encouraged, of course.

Oct. 23 | Ian Ferguson at Munro’s Books Canadian satirist and B.C. resident Ian Ferguson is at Munro’s to present his latest work, The Survival Guide to British Columbia—a how-to manual filled with snark, wit and the occasional earnest and oddly practical tip to living in our little corner of the country. The event runs from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and is free to attend.

Oct. 24 | Atomic Vaudeville Halloween Cabaret Forget Rocky Horror Picture Show; this beloved cabaret series is putting on a Halloween-themed night titled, “It’s a Mystery”. You’ll follow along with the Quin twins, Tegan and Sara, who will be solving mysteries and pumping out tunes. (Don’t worry, if the thought of forgoing Rocky Horror Picture Show is too much of a fright, Atomic will also be putting on a production of this cult classic from Oct. 23 to Nov. 2nd.) Find dates and ticket info for both performances here

Oct. 25 | Ukrainian Supper The Ukrainian Canadian Cultural Society of Vancouver Island is back with their latest Ukranian supper, a delightful dinner series that features homemade pierogies, cabbage rolls, sausages and borscht. You can mingle with fellow pierogi lovers at communal tables, grab yourself a tumbler of wine or a can of beer, and listen to live music provided by the Gypsy Rovers. Dinner goes from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. We suggest an earlier seating, as these nights are popular. Cash or Interac only.

Oct. 25-26 | Oktoberfest at Edelweiss Club If you can’t fly to Germany for Oktoberfest (or back in time, as the real holiday happened back in September), why not take your high socks and lederhosen to the next best thing: the local German cultural society, Victoria Edelweiss Club. This local Oktoberfest party features flowing beer, traditional food, and music and at $45 a ticket for non-members, it’s selling out fast.

Oct. 26 | Zombie Walk You know the drill: spackle on Elmer’s glue, prosthetics, makeup putty and chunky layers of fake blood to create a living dead face no mother could not scream at, and then limp your way down to the Centennial Square for Victoria’s annual Zombie Walk 2019. The horror, gore and jovial camaraderie kicks off at 3 p.m. and goes until 5:30 p.m. Important: zombies are not permitted to smear blood on observers and local citizens, no matter how clean and undead they look.

Oct. 18-26 | Once More With Feeling: An Unlicensed Buffie the Vampire Slayer Parody Attention nostalgic ’80s kids! It’s a Buffy the Vampire Slayer parody and holy Sarah Michelle Gellar we are excited. This Unlicensed “Buffie” show is a reimagining of the classic episode, “Once More With Feeling,” originally written by Joss Whedon, only there’s an alien and much more laughter. It’s a loving homage, with all your favourite characters. The last night show is Saturday, Oct. 26.

Oct. 25 | U-Pick Pumpkins at Providence Farm Hit the Cowichan Valley fields for your chance to nab the best farm-to-porch pumpkin your arms can carry. Depending on the size, they are priced at $4, $5, or $6 each. Providence Farm opens its gates to pumpkin hunters at 10 a.m., and closes at 4 p.m.

Oct. 25 | Grape Escape Nanaimo’s feature wine event is returning for another year. Sample 200 different wines from around the world, all paired to food prepared by Chef Ian Ter Veer of The Grand Hotel. Expect live music and prizes too. Tickets from $90.

Campbell River

Oct. 26 | Yoga and a Pint Come stretch your legs with Beach Fire Brewing’s yoga and pint event. Lena from Inner Compass Yoga will guide you through an hour of flow yoga—ideal for centering yourself before the onslaught of Halloween—followed by a tasty beer in the brewery. Drop-ins are welcome, although space is limited. $20 will get you an hour of yoga and a pint.
